Challenge
Improving the protective features of combat vehicles is a complex problem of the highest order. Too much armor and the vehicle's weight degrade maneuverability, speed, range and acceleration. Not enough armor, or a poor design, and survivability suffers.
Solution
Solving this problem requires precise knowledge about mission profiles and threat performance, understanding armor material characteristics at the molecular level, and a systems engineering approach to mechanical design that optimizes protection without sacrificing performance. Battelle engineers met the challenge of improving protection for HUMVEEs, and live-fire testing at our own high-energy laboratory accelerated development and ensured rapid delivery to meet our client's needs.
Outcome
Battelle's next-generation HUMVEE armor kits gave our clients survivability and performance in a lightweight design that could adapt to new threats and mission profiles. Proven in combat, Battelle's innovative designs are now found on several new types of special mission vehicles.
